Nancy LaMott, cabaret entertainer, with “All The Things You Are” and “I’m Glad There Is You”.  There are many You tube videos available that feature Ms. LaMott, as well as a wonderful website in her honor–enjoy!

Thursday is the day of the week when McElrath Cabaret will feature some of our favorite cabaret blogs, websites or performers. Today we’re featuring a cabaret online magazine called After Dark-NYC, written by John Hoglund.  Mr. Hoglund also has an online presence on Facebook.

Mr. Hoglund is no newcomer to the world of reporting on entertainment, including cabaret performance.  He has been writing for over 27 years as an entertainment critic, and according to the From The Editor page on the website, his work has been published in many places, including:

  •  Back Stage (12 years,)
  • Theater Week
  •  NY Native
  •  Stonewall
  •  InTheater
  • Greenwich Village Pres
  • ,Village Voice
  •  Night & Day
  •  Cabaret Hotline Online
  •  NitelifeExchange.com
  • Cabaret Scenes
  • Theaterscene.net
  • Private Lives

He has also served on the board of MAC; has been a member of the Outer Critics’ Circle briefly; has his own production company,  Inner Circle Productions; has served on the annual Back Stage Bistro Awards committee  and is a record producer.

Mr. Hoglund describes the mission of the online magazine like this:

AfterDark-NYC  is an imaginative online entertainment magazine service focusing on the arts, happenings and selective listings throughout the New York City area. It is our goal to provide readers worldwide with an assortment of current listings and up to the minute news announcements and happenings from the collective worlds of theatre, cabaret, jazz, dance clubs, restaurants, nightlife and other worthy “after dark” features, information, interviews, photos – and listings. We plan to cover many stages.

And, yes, the title was influenced by the defunct After Dark Magazine which was published from 1968 until 1982.

This online magazine is a great resource for the cabaret entertainer and enthusiast.  It includes sections on:

When you click on the Cabaret link, it will take you to listings for Manhattan supper clubs, cabaret/jazz rooms, as well as piano bars/rooms/open mics.  Under this link, you will also find listings for Comedy Clubs, Cabaret reviews written by Mr. Hoglund, and articles.

I particularly enjoyed his article originally written for Cabaret Hotline Online’s August 6, 2007 edition entitled “There’s Always An Encore!”  In it he talks about nightclubs that are closing , and some thoughts about what can be done to change the situation so that cabaret can survive.  His reviews are also a delight to read.

A really wonderful addition to what is available online that covers cabaret so well.  For the cabaret enthusiast, I recommend After Dark-NYC Online Magazine!
