Matt Dennis, songwriter of several cabaret standards and a fine singer himself, playing and singing a favorite of mine that he wrote, “Angel Eyes.” Information about Matt Dennis can be found on Wikipedia, including the fact from this article that Mr. Dennis was a native of Seattle, Washington (yay entertaining Washingtonians!), wrote the sound tracks and acted in several films, and was mentioned in the New York Times. You can see and hear several of his songs on You Tube. Enjoy!
Thursday is the day of the week when McElrath Cabaret will feature some of our favorite cabaret blogs, websites or performers. Today’s cabaret blog that I am excited to bring to your attention is Inside Cabaret.
A new cabaret blog that just got its start this year, Inside Cabaret is hosted by a long-time cabaret lover based in Australia. Although the author of Inside Cabaret states the she has written about cabaret and was a contributor to Cabaret Confessional from 2002-2012, she is now branching out with this new cabaret blog.
This is how she describes the purpose of her blog:
I would like to share my passion for this magical art form on this little blog. I write about anything and everything about cabaret from one audience’s perspective.
More specifically, I’m here to talk about artists and news that pique my interest, recommend shows that I’d like to see/help spread the word, and at times have guest bloggers on board.
Cabaret enthusiasts will be delighted to read Inside Cabaret’s detailed listings for cabaret shows to be held in Australia this month, as well as announcements for recently held and upcoming performances from cabaret singers performing in New York, which include Barb Jungr (including a great video clip with this post), and Emily Bergl.
I particularly enjoyed the Up Close And Personal interviews held with cabaret entertainers Kim Smith, Natalie Douglas, Jenny Wynter, Angela Lumicisi and Francesca Amari. Hope that there will be more of these in the future!
There is also included an extensive archive of her previously published reviews from 2009 to 2012. Her review writing is concise, descriptive and fair, which I find refreshing in a reviewer.
For the cabaret performer and aficionado, I recommend Inside Cabaret!
