Welcome to Cabaret Tip Tuesday at McElrath Cabaret, where we offer cabaret performance tips to help you put together a great performance at your next show!

Today I’m thinking about being a prepared cabaret singer, so my tip for you today is this:  Make a song list with your keys.

If you are participating in piano bars, open mics or jam sessions, one of the best gifts you can give to yourself is to create a list of songs that you like to sing, and the keys in which you sing them.  When you get called up to sing, and the adrenalin is running a little, and you might be a little nervous in front of a new audience, you do not want to have to spend a bunch of time with the accompanist trying to figure out your key.  Most accompanists in these situations will be professional and do their best to make you sound good, but it is really on the singer to be prepared, and not waste not only the accompanist’s time but also the audience’s.

When you have a list with keys, it is then a simple thing to pick your song, go right up to the piano player and give them the key, and then turn and smile and share it with the audience!  No fumbling, just smooth–that’s how you want to be on stage.

You might have a song list written out on a piece of paper that you keep with you at such events, or as my online friend Karen mentioned, it is fairly easy to keep a list on your cell phone or other hand-held electronic device of your choice, so it is right there with you wherever you happen to be.

Hope these Tuesday cabaret tips help–let us know what other topics you’d like to see us cover here, and we’ll do our best to work through them!
