The fabulous Broadway entertainer, and a teacher at this year’s Yale Cabaret Conference, Faith Prince!  This song is from one of my favorite Broadway musicals, and it’s called Little Me.  There are many You Tubes available that showcase Ms. Prince’s singing, and you can learn more on Wikipedia, IMDB, and IBDB.

Wednesday is the day of the week when we at McElrath Cabaret post a cabaret question for the consideration of our readers.  The questions have something to do with cabaret, in all its many aspects.

 

We encourage you to send us any cabaret question that you have that you would like us to pose to the group! This week’s question is:  Who is your favorite songwriter from the 1920s, and why do you like his or her songs?

 

This is really hard, because there were so many good ones.  I would have to pick Irving Berlin.  A prolific writer, with over 4,000 works to his credit, and an amazing story of his life growing up in the streets of New York to fabulous fame and prestige among all the writers of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood, Mr. Berlin has my respect and admiration.  I love cabaret singer and songwriter extrordinaire John Wallowitch’s story of his going to Irving Berlin’s apartment when Berlin was in his 90s, and Wallowitch, who didn’t know Mr. Berlin personally, stood outside the window out on the street at Christmastime and sang the Berlin standards, “White Christmas” and “I’ll Be Loving You Always.”  I love Irving Berlin’s songs because the melodies are beautiful, and the lyrics speak to me, so I can communicate what they mean to me to an audience.  They have the power to make me cry and laugh, and because they are so universal in feeling, I can always think back in my own life of a time or an experience that relates to his lyrics, which makes all the difference when I sing.
