Ask A Cabaret Question at McElrath Cabaret – Is There A Cabaret Sing-Off In Your Hometown? Join The Conversation!

Welcome to McElrath Cabaret–We hope you enjoy our cabaret blog!

Here is Part Two of Dorothy Loudon‘s wonderful live cabaret recording from The Blue Angel club.  You can see Part One in yesterday’s Cabaret Tip Tuesday post–enjoy!

Last night we went out to watch the election results with friends who were having at the same time and place a fundraiser for their theatre in Portland, Oregon–FUSE Theatre.  We enjoyed the fun energy at Jam on Hawthorne throughout the evening.  While there, we happened to meet a gentleman who recently won a cabaret-style singing contest, and it got me to thinking, so today’s cabaret question is this:

Is there a cabaret-style sing-off in your hometown?

I’m happy to say that in Portland, there is one held every quarter at Tony Starlight’s Superclub and Lounge–It’s called Sing For Your Supperclub.  You get to select from a number of charts that have been prepared in women’s and men’s keys, and then on the first evening of the event you show up and have a chance to sing with the pianist, Bo Ayars, and the horn section.  If the audience likes you, they applaud loud, and audience response is one of the criteria used by the panel of professional singers who are the judges for the event, who choose the lucky singers who get to move up to semi-final rounds and eventually a final round.  The winner of the contest gets a 45-minute show at Tony Starlight’s with Bo Ayars and the All-Star Horns Band–a pretty nice prize!

So…is there a cabaret sing-off in your hometown? Let us know down in the comments!
